Pediatric Disaster

Disaster Preparedness was noted to be an area that most NH EDs fell short on in our pediatric readiness assessment. We will be working alongside the Granite State Health Care Coalition to improve this aspect of preparedness in the future.

Until then, here are some great resources to improve your facility's disaster planning:

EIIC's Toolkit for ED, EMS and families

A comprehensive approach to the topic of pediatrics and disasters.

For Providers:

AAP Webinar Series on Disaster Planning

Topics include Tools for Family Reunification, Planning for Pedi Surges and Handoff Strategies. Very progressive and exceptionally informative!

AAP Tool for Family Reunification

A tool to provide guidance and templates for hospitals as they review and update their plans to provide information, support services, and safe reunification assistance to family members of patients who have experienced disasters

NIH Children in Disasters

This site is a collection of resources related to medical and public health issues of children (and pregnant women!) in disasters and emergencies. Links are provided to both journal articles and to other documents and materials that may be useful in preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery activities. Resources are national or international in scope.

Webinar: Providing Psychosocial Support to Children and Families

This webinar discusses effects of disaster on the psychological functioning and growth of children and describes practical ways to incorporate behavior health policies and practices into disaster plans and embed them into everyday practice.

For Families:

CDC: Care for Children in a Disaster

Geared towards families, this site shows how disasters affect children from start to finish including children with special health care needs, coping mechanisms and a children's activity book on coping.
